The Bronze Process

PATINA FINISHING
Patination is the application of chemicals to the surface, which will oxidize with the metal to change the color of the bronze.
Three water soluble compounds form the basis for most patinas: Ferric Nitrate produces reds and browns, Cupric Nitrate creates the greens and blues and Sulphurated Potash produces black. |

The different choices of chemicals chosen for this piece gave a variety of color, which seems to distinguish the individual textures of the bronze. An experienced patineur has the intuition, knowledge and chemicals available, to offer a wiide range of colors, both transparent and opaque.
A few areas were rubbed back to raw bronze on the sculpture for highlight and accents, and some color was added for the abalone shell and various adornments. |

The patination process also will increase the ability of the sculpture to sustain the elements once it is placed out of doors. Also, a thin coat of wax should be applied to enhance and protect the patina.
Bronze sculptures should be carefully cleaned and waxed at least once a year, especially if they are kept out of doors.
